Dota 2 eSports – Top Tips
Dota 2 is complex and fun and can teach you a lot about your own strategy making skills. But the game can be competitive too, going as far as getting into the professional scene. In case you have plans of picking it up, this article will reveal some information about it.
Dota 2 eSports – How It All Started
It all started back in 2003 for Dota 2. But before Dota 2, it was known just as DotA, short for “Defense of the Ancients”. Warcraft 3 was a very popular game, and someone known as “Eul” created a mod for it, which established the foundations of the Dota 2 eSports game known in the present. But that’s not where it stopped – a few other people came up with their own mods in an attempt to win popularity, after the release of a new extension pack. Steve Feak ended up being the winner with his mod, and together with his friend Steve Mescon, he created the website for the DotA community. However, Feak decided to retire later on.
That’s when someone with the pseudonym “IceFrog” came into play, designing the Dota mod. Thanks to his wonderful designs for the mod, it gained a lot of popularity and possibly became one of the most loved mods. Because of that, IceFrog was contacted by Valve, who was interested in creating a modern sequel for the mod. He accepted to work with them on the sequel and to avoid any conflict with Steve Mescon, the name was changed from the acronym DotA to simply Dota, which is more of a concept. It took a few years to develop the full game, but it was released a little later.
How to Play Dota 2
Learning the basics of playing Dota 2 is not so difficult, but you are going to need a lot of dedication and skill to master it. The eSport Dota 2 is a team-based game, so you will have to create a team in order to be able to play. You can find some players directly in the game or play with friends. Your goal in the popular electronic sports game is to protect your base from enemy attacks. At the same time, you will have to go to the enemy base and destroy the Ancient building. Of course, you will also have to face the players defending the base in the process.
There are multiple heroes that you can pick from to play. The eSport Dota has a list of hundreds of heroes, and there’s a hero for everyone. At the start of the game, your hero will be weaker, having no experience and very little gold. But as the match progresses, you will be able to gain gold, as well as experience to upgrade your hero and make it stronger. Gold will give you the change to purchase items that will help you when facing your opponents and for many other things.
Dota 2 in eSports
Aside from being a great PC game, Dota 2 is also a big sensation in the eSports industry. There are multiple Dota eSports events happening every year. Even big events such as DreamHack, Electronic Sports World Cup and ESL organize tournaments for Dota 2. It became one of the highest-paying eSport games in 2011, and now there’s a huge number of professional teams and players that earn a lot by participating in these tournaments and winning. Some of the prize pools for tournaments are crowdfunded, as it was the case with The International. The prize pool increased with each passing year, all thanks to the battle passes on sale. The last edition, aka the International 2019, had a prize pool of over $34 million.
The eSports Dota 2 will be around for many years to come, seeing that its community is still very much alive and thriving. It will be fun to see how many other pro teams and players are going to join the game and win more tournaments.
